I really must get the hang of this blogging lark, a first time reader might think I'm mute - but anybody who knows me KNOWS I chatter with the best of them. Just been very busy with second draft of WIP, and working through some personal stuff.

I also must start submitting flash again.

Who set the clock forward to spring? Last time I took a peek we were in depths of winter....

So much has gone on - life, writing, stuff. Current novel is first-drafted and now well into the real business of knocking it into shape. What I can take from this lapse (in time) is - I'm not an avid blogger! I only speak when I have something to say.

Cornbread and Candy Sauce

Here's a little seasonal gift. A flash of mine that was originally published in The Ranfurly Review.

Cornbread and Candy Sauce

Big, fat, flakes tumbled down, covering everywhere – deadening sound and softening contours. An icy wind flapped in from the north causing some flakes to swirl and dance on their way down from the leaden sky.

Snow was falling hard.

The blizzard had been raging all day. And now the barn had a drift stacked up against the lea-side. Inside, flakes fluttered through cracks in the boarding – to flurry in a spiral and sprawl over the floor. They lay where they landed – no warmth melted their hearts. The quiet was like a presence – heavy and waiting.

Back and forth a rope swung slightly – a tiny occasional creak the only indication of the weight it held.

Drip.

A viscous, crimson plop.

A furry scurrying told of interest from some hidden inhabitants. But the long rope, attached to the rafters, swung lone and inaccessible. Experience dictated the position.

Drip-drop.

Dark red, thick, mixed with the snow covering the iron ground.

Suddenly a crack of yellow light from the door; foot stamping and hot breath blowing on hands. Ma shone the lantern on the rope’s bottom. They both stood and admired the plum-bob weight - Christmas dinner.

“Sure is a big ‘un.”

“Sure is.”

“How’d ya catch it?”

“Same as usual - corn-bread and candy sauce. Gobbled it right up. And then - thwack!!”

A mime matched the words. A hammer blow to crack a small head.

“When’ll ya draw and pluck it?”

“When time’s right. Waddaya think?”

“20 minutes a pound’ll be a long cook at that weight! Best not stuff it – it’ll take forever to roast, else.”

The lantern’s light wavered and receded; voices dimmed and faded out. The latch was closed.

Plop-plop.

Thick blood dripped down stiff fingers and onto the floor, covering a wristwatch and obscuring the dial.

Not everyone ate turkey at Christmas.

Post NaNo - I got the 50K done - WooHoo!!

So, I wrote 50,077 words last month. they were in sentences, paragraphs and everything. I even managed some fair spelling, too. Ok, what the hell, I'll admit it - I relied on spell-checkers. Doesn't everyone?

I calculate I am about 62% complete on the first draft and I'd like to get cracking on writing the other 38% over December - so come the New Year I can slap that text about a bit and get a solid second draft.

I am also concurrently (Multi-tasking, me) submitting my second novel Market Warfare, and I hope to get an Agent interested in helping me take it to market.

It's November and it's NaNoWroMo time!! Can the bunch of us keep up the output - will there be a novel at the end? Who knows, but it's jolly good fun and very helpful to write in competition against others. Very motivating. Meanwhile I have some printing to do to get the other novel out of the door and on it's way to some lucky agent!

since last I posted. Second draft finished and away to a reader panel. And I'm 20K plus into WIP3. I find it a challenge to try and emulate Trollope and write 2000 words a day. Thing is he did it longhand using a quill pen (I think) and then went on to his day job.

If I keep this rate up I'll be finished mid September and can get back to the third draft of WIP2.

I am an infrequent blogger. I have to admit that. But I do wonder - fleetingly - who these people are who leave Chinese/Japanese written comments on my entries?

Not enough to be actually curious and follow them back to their own blogs/site/whatevers. Just enough to ask 'em - please stop it and go and bother someone else.

This type of behaviour doesn't make you interesting, it makes you a dork...

Oh my WIP is now ~ 101K, and I'm heading down the end slope towards the finishing flag.

Then with the first draft written down, I'll start to craft the book...

I am still deeply into my WIP - just passed 45,000 words and still going strong. But still found time to enter the Seventh International Ultra-short Competition at The Binnicle. Fingers crossed!

Have you ever thought about that trip back to Bethlehem for the tax payment? What it might have been like? What it might be like today? Well wonder no more, dear reader! Here is my take on it - originally published by Bewildering Stories, but I thought I'd post it again here just for you:

On the Road Home

I revisited our old stomping ground last week, before we set out on this trek. Remembering all the good times we’d had there, and no mistake! Maz’s always been one for a good time, you know?

“Jezza” she’d say to me, “You are a one, so you are!”

And we’d roll in the sweetly scented hay, stifling our laughter with kisses.

But that was BC - before conception. When she fell, she told her parents she was still a virgin; swore blind we’d never done IT. Well, she’s a good girl, isn’t she? We didn’t want people to think she was a slag, y’know? A miracle they all said. I went along with it; stood by her. They were suspicious, but I was clear of any dog-house. Then some old bastard passed that law about the likes of me returning home to pay my taxes.

So here we are on our way back, with Maz sitting on a donkey that’s on its last legs, and her bulging fit to burst. God knows if we’ll make it all the way before the baby comes. To make it easy, we're just following that new star in the east; even a sightless man could follow that all the way home.

And when we do arrive, what’s the betting there’re no rooms to be had, anywhere? S’pose in the end we’ll be grateful for a stack of hay in any old stable. Mind you, I’ve got very fond memories of Maz in stables; know what I mean?

Last night she turns to me, with a big goofy Madonna-like smile plastered all over her face, and says:

“Don’t worry; we’ll get through this Jezza. And then the baby’ll be born... and we’ll be a proper family.”

Now there’s blind faith for you. Women – eh?

Lucifer, Casting Shadows

The wind sawed and whistled through the canopy of branches overhead; taking the trees’ autumn cloaks away, ready for the coming winter‘s sleep. He could taste the cold on his tongue, sharp and sweet, as he lay sheltered and snug in the comfy basket. She had placed a pillow at the bottom, to ease his weary bones. And he could sense her now - hovering anxiously, wanting to do more, yet knowing not what. He wiggled his nose and yawned; his whiskers twitched.

He remembered back to when he was a kitten; Her kindness and cuddles; fighting with a brother -but locking in to defend alongside that brother from all comers. Growing and scraping; investigating and exploring – and getting stuck up a tree:

“Well you got up there – now get yourself down!” She had said laughing; face upturned, hands on hips.

Now opening one sleepy emerald orb he encountering Her apprehensive eyes and slowly began a rumbling purr to reassure. Her loving and much loved hand gently laid on his head then rippled down his back, caressing his coat; soothing his ache. They stayed together in companionable silence; watching sunbeams flicker off the pond; catching the whiff of wood smoke on the riffling wind from a garden down the way. Finally, as the sun melted away behind the trees, laying deep shadows across the garden and making dark mysterious pools, he huffed in quick satisfaction.

For now it was enough to sit and be – with Her there to comfort.

Today had been a good day.

I am moving into chapter ten now of the WIP. Had a bit of a block, but it is melting away now so I hope to plough on with that now.

Just had some very encouraging news back from The Stiletto in the Door 2009 Competition for ChickLit. I entered my first novel Moving On and had a lot of very positive feedback. Due to stupid errors (My own silly fault - yes really!!) in the text I entered I didn't make next round... Well that and probably the others were better! (But I am sticking with my first bash at an explanation.)

Also I am happy to tell y'all that I have had three more flash accepted.

2 have been published already - one over @ The Pygmy Giant called A Cup of Tea, and the other - my first! - @ Ink, Sweat & Tears called In the Heat of the Night. Bit rude that one!

The third will be up @ The Boston Literary Magazine in their Fall edition (due soon but not out) and that one is called Hallelujah - based on the Leonard Cohen song, interwined with the story of Bathsheba, Uriah and King David from The Old Testament.

Tell me if you think it works...

But not on here!

I have got the new novel up and running - chapter 6 beckons starting Tuesday. The first five are out with a reader panel as I type...

The first novel is in this year's "Stiletto in the door Competition" for ChickLit Writers. Results are due in August. If you don't get into the final, you get a crit, so everyone's a winner!

This new one is definitely not ChickLit - much darker, very unfrothy and a lot meaner. Rather like some of my Flash Fiction then!!

I must get around to subbing stuff again...

Neglected and Abandoned

I am afraid I have been most remiss in updating this blog. What with attending The London Book Fair, joining Facebook and writing the synopsis for yet another novel, in between fitting writing the flash stories I've been a bit busy. Well that's my excuse!

I also took part in The Midnight Walk around Ipswich. An 8 mile route, which proved to be so popular that instead of the hoped for 800+ women taking part (the organisers' target after last year's 200) - there were a staggering 2000+ of us!! The Walk was in aid of St Elizabeth's Hospice, and raised £100,000+. A great night's work.

My flash "Rite of Passage" was published on Backhand Stories on 9th May. Go and take a skeg. It's a coming of age piece.

On The Road Home

has been up at Bewildering Stories this March. This on the surface of it is a somewhat sly poke at the Christian Nativity story. But if you care to look further into it, you'll find my attempt to write these characters (substitute Mary and Josephs) as real life, modern day characters.

I am sure these two (should they have existed) didn't think themselves other than normal, everyday people. They had faults, broke wind, loved - just like people of today, y'know? There must have been a time when Mary was... just plain Mary. No halo.

I hope this makes you think.

Cheers for now, hope to start submitting flash again soon, but the novel bug has bitten deep - having finished the first one, I'm now well into the second.

Wish me luck getting an agent interested in the first one!!

Hi

February is set to be a quiet month for me don't think there are any stories published this month, I am concentrating on editing the novel into a state I'm happy with, getting the revisions done, and crafting my synopsis - all to perfection! (Well I hope!!)

But I have to crow about getting an email from Robin over @ Boston Literary Magazine asking for permission to put one of my flashes ( The Last Charade, look in earlier posts for the tag) into a Chapbook they are publishing. Needless to say I am extremely flattered and almost snatched her hand off!

That's 3 anthologies I've made it into, well waddaya know?

just a blink, and weeks fly by! I've been tied up trying to free a block in my first attempt at a novel... well I say first attempt - that isn't counting the Regency Bodice Ripper I got to chapter 5 many years ago!! maybe I should dig out the notes and plough on, eh?

Well today the world stands with its collective fingers in its ears – waiting for the big bang! Out in CERN the scientists are going to throw the switch to turn on the super-cooled coils, looking for the pesky God Particle, you know the one that Higgs was convinced we needed to find to explain how the universe works.

So much hype and breast beating: “Today the World might end!” is dramatic fodder for the hungry news machines, a sound bite which fills the media void, fleetingly. And yet, today will be a whimper as the switch is flicked to on. Logically, any risk to the Universal fabric will come later, in the wee anonymous hours of some future date, when those massive coils have leached out enough heat to approach absolute zero, and the target particles have increased in velocity to get close enough to Einstein’s C.

Maybe there is a God Particle lurking amongst the charms and the quarks; but maybe we should allow for its opposite too. And if so, perhaps the devils within the atom should be allowed to remain at peace, undisturbed by inquisitive arrogance and the childish insistence of wanting to know.

Go and visit, and perhaps you'll become a fan of the short too! They are longer than a flash, but shorter than a full book!

Where to start...

Since last time I posted?

Well I went for a fabulous two weeks down in Cornwall, body-boarding. The weather could have been sunnier, but when you are skimming the waves and drenched anyway, a little light drizzle doesn't seem to get in your way!

At least the temperature held steady, so teeth didn't chatter when we left the surf. SO un-cool!

I have just heard I've made the top ten in the recent Doorknobs & Bodypaint summer Dorsel competition, on the theme "Heat". Friends Oonah Joslin and John Allen were also placed (higher up) so I don't feel lonely! Well done to the pair of you! All winning stories will be published. My entry was called "Never Smile at a Crocodile", and was a wee bit naughty!

I've also made the Short Humour site's anthology, with a story called "Drizzled Hope". My husband says this is very apt, as I am both short and (upon occasion) humorous! Synergy in action there then!
